Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
