Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
