British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
