Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
